Dr. Gerhardt Konig, 65, was convicted following a high-profile trial that centered on a harrowing incident on a remote trail along Maui’s rugged coastline. His wife, Danyelle Konig, miraculously survived a fall of approximately 20 feet, landing on a rocky ledge that prevented her from plunging further into the ocean below.

According to prosecutors, the incident was not a tragic accident but a calculated attempt by Konig to "eliminate" his wife. During the trial, the state presented evidence that Konig had been engaged in a long-term extramarital affair. They argued that the doctor sought to end his marriage without the financial burden of a divorce, choosing instead to orchestrate a fatal "accident" during their hike.

The prosecution’s case was bolstered by emotional testimony from the victim. Danyelle Konig told the jury that as they stood near the edge of the cliff to take in the view, she felt a sudden, forceful shove from behind.

Dr. Konig and his legal team maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. Konig testified in his own defense, claiming that a physical altercation had broken out between the couple. He alleged that his wife was the aggressor and that her fall was a result of a struggle or a tragic stumble, rather than a deliberate push.

However, the jury found the prosecution’s timeline and the evidence of his secret life more compelling than his claims of self-defense.

After days of deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict for second-degree attempted murder. Under Hawaii law, the conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

The Konig case has sent shockwaves through the local community, where the doctor was a well-known medical professional. For the victim, the verdict brings a close to a legal battle that began on what was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon walk.

Dr. Konig is currently awaiting formal sentencing, where the Hawaii Paroling Authority will eventually determine the minimum number of years he must serve before becoming eligible for release.
